Presenting complaint: burnt oil smell
History: last winter applied Rustproofing oil to car's bottom at Can.Tire.chain store. Some white smoke on first few hours of use+burnt oil smell. Then gone all winter.
This spring some kind of smell from engine compartment,no smoke when driven for ~10 km.Water pump brakes pads front+rotors was changed 2 years ago.Car uses 1 liter of engine oil(semi synthetic) per 6-12 months.
thanks for possible clues.Should I change to dyno oil.

Have you checked for a valve cover gasket leak? Sometimes they leak engine oil onto the exhaust manifolds.

Is the burnt smell coming from under the hood
you may have engine oil leak from valve cover
gasket or front engine timing cover seals.

Tightened the valve cover gaskets.Changed oil ifller cap.Oil cap very tight, new and old.Is this a common problem.
What is the life expectancy of the oil cap,PO replaced it 2-3 years ago and it was leaking a bit already.
When I tried to get a new seal from MB,they laugh at me and said they only sell the whole cap at $8.5 Canadian. Not expensive for MB parts, but seems a waste and environmentally unfriendly.
