Bad Seat Belt Relay

Howdy,

My fasten seat belt light has been stuck on for a few weeks now. Today, the mechanic told me it was a bad relay. He didn't have the part in stock, so he disconnected the relay as a temporary measure. My question is, does this mean anything more than no light and buzzer? If that's all it is, that's no problem, but I'm curious if I'm sacrificing anything by not having a functioning relay there? Thanks

Technically you have altered a safety system. This is against federal law although I doubt any enforcing agency would know enough to say.

The relay is sometimes involved with the dome light operation as the door switch runs through some of them. mostly it is just a safety warning system, that plays no part in driveability.

Thanks a bunch, Steve. I guess I'll play it safe and cough up the money to get the relay replaced. It's kind of funny that you mention the dome light in this, because I actually had my mechanic fix it. The PO had wired the radar detector through the dome light (as a means to get into the roof), which had left the light non-functioning. I was only able to repair it to the extent that it would turn on when the door opened, but my mechanic said that some wires were crossed and it looks all straightened out now. Anyway, thanks again!
