92 400E transmission

When car is cold and I back out of driveway onto road, shift into Drive and press the accelerator, engine will wind up and then slam into gear. I have to feather accelerator to avoid loud clunk but still trans. seems to search for gear before going forward. The moment car is warm no more problems. Any thoughts? Dealer says not much of a problem but if it bothers me I have to buy a new transmission.

How many seconds does it take to engage Drive? On mine, which I've owned since it was a pup with 25 k miles, it has always taken about 2 seconds to engage Drive after I stop and shift out of Reverse. This is not unusual or abnormal. Two seconds can seem like a long time, and if you get in a hurry and hit the gas before the tranny has fully engaged, you'll get that "thunk" when it finally does engage, and is now under load. The fix is to take a deep breath and wait.

On the other hand, if it's taking 4 seconds or longer, that's a sign of wear and an impending overhaul, as I understand it.

How many miles on the tranny? Is the fluid level OK? How long since the tranny's been serviced?

Steve, It's not that it takes long to engage. It engages but not under load. In other words, you can feel it step into gear but when the accelerator is pressed, no matter how gently, the engine will rev up for a second and then clunk into gear. It feels as though you could snap a universal joint. It then takes a block to upshift. This is not usual. I've driven a lot of these cars and never felt this before. The car only has 44K Miles on it. It lived in San Francisco and maybe the hills had something to do with it. Thanks for replying.

The delay in upshifting is built in, as a pollution control thing. After the engine warms up, the 1-2 upshift is normal, right? If so, that's that issue. The delay in the initial engagement is a separate issue. I'll be interested to see if anyone else has some experience with this.

What you’re experiencing is sometimes referred to as a double engagement of the transmission. The problem is due to a defective valve body that wants to be replaced. I think there is a note about it on alldata.com. I have seen others comment on it here. You might do a search for double engagement

The delay in upshifting when cold is by design, as others have stated.

Cheers
