Not sure if the fan clutch is the same on the 124 diesel, but if it is the viscus type, non magnetic, they usually fail with the fan not engaged! Just free-wheel without pulling enough air in.

Are you sure you're not referring to the 2 auxilliary fans (black) in front of the condensor? These 2 fans are electric and kick in according to A/C and engine coolant temp input. If they run continuously the problem could be an open circuit in your coolant temp sensor or an overcharged/undercharged A/C system.

The single fan (yellowish) attached to the fan clutch is belt driven and will always run with the engine on. It is of the viscous type so the speed varies according to engine heat.

Good Luck

Thank you for your reply's. I just replaced the fan clutch and now it does not sound like a bus upon acceleration. THe twin fans go on about 100 degrees celsius. Car has taken me a long time to get it to where it is today and I have to say it was worth it. Thank you for all your help.
