Hi Jim! Glad it worked out... scariest thing is taking it apart!
Not a particularly "robust" design is it? :-) Regards,

Great thread!
I'd seen this thread some time ago, and when my mirror recently started to wobble, went back and found it. This afternoon I followed the instructions and fixed it - Good as New! Both of the bottom tabs were broken - I used the small holes and wire loop method myarmar mentioned. The tough part was getting the mirror out - you need to use an uncomfortable amount of prying force to separate the two pieces at Step 4 of bourman's 30 step process.

I've seen McDonalds Happy Meal toys built better than these cheesey mirrors!
(Fixed one on a 97 S500 a year or so ago)

Thanks for the info. It is beyond me why Mercedes does not offer the $5 plastic bezel that breaks as a separate part. It even has a part number on it, but is not a current number.

The really scary thing is to wonder how many folks have shelled out $1,000 or so just to have it break again in short order...

My mirror with motors still works, but the mirror does not dim - night lights bright in my eyes.
If I do revamp the motors and such - how do I get the mirror to Dim?

My mirror moves and operates fine but it doesn't dim at night when somebody has their brights or misaligned headlights aimed at me from behind. How many owners have failed auto-dimming rearview mirrors but live with it by simply pushing the switch up-down-left-right to avoid being blinded???
When the top is down I usually put up the rollbar to block some of the light: doesn't help much when I'm being tailed by a 4 X 4 monster truck

Nice ride!
Try a flash light at the sensor in a dark garage or at night and see if it turns green.

The auto-dimming feature is not working because my '01 Volvo XC had that feature and I would notice it being activated (turning a light green/blue color that made it look like all the cars behind me had xenon headlamps).
I fixed my rearview from flopping around by using Velcro to hold it in place. Works like a charm because if I made a mistake (like using an adhesive or superglue), I could reposition it. p.s. Thanks for the compliment about Dieter.

Read the thread I (and others) posted. The fix is simple.

I know this is a Long-shot but does anyone know where to get the piece of trim showed in post number 7? Mine is broken and I cannot seem to find a replacement part online anywhere. The part number is 140 811 04 71.
Thanks, Ddmassett

I guess you have tried the dealer. If the part number is no longer available, your only hope is a used part or try to fix yours.

Should still be possible at the dealer for <$30, but
remember that there is a 4 digit color code at the back of that number. br, syljua

Thanks to all the help here, I got the broken clips repaired.
I am stuck however on the metal swivel ball and the black plastic socket piece. Some of the tabs broke off on the socket. Is there a workaround for this or am I going to have to find a whole new mirror? |
