I have a 1988 190E.
I just had my battery charged and tested OK by Advance Auto parts. They said its probably the alternater. They sell one for $250 new, includes $50 core charge. Question is this part OK, or should I go to my MB shop and get a genuine Bosch alternater? ------------------ ROX |
Only about 1 out of 5 alternators fail & need replaced. The real problem is the voltage regulator. It bolts onto the back of the Alt. & is simple to replace. Either way stay w/O.E. Bosch parts.

Thanks, for your quick reply.
I have a catalog from IMPCO that has exploded drawings. I don't see the Voltage Regulater. How much is it? How "simple" is it to install? Thanks. |
Usually about 100. or so US dollars. And it is about a hour or two if you haven't done the repair before and you have to take the little cover off of the rear of the alt.

On my 83 SD's alternator there is a rectangular black plastic box attached to the back of it. About an inch long or so. Is this the voltage regulator or do i need to remove half the alternator housing?

Thanks, all. A followup: The Voltage Regulator was bad. My MB mechanic replaced it. Part was $29, labor $48.
Thanks, |
Robert, yes the volt reg. is the little black box on the rear of the alt. Two screws & its off.
