w124 300CE, 1992...bouncing fuel gauge
hey you guys
anyone experiencing a bouncing fuel gauge? ugh i am and it's driving me nuts.... does this mean i need a new fuel gauge? or what? MAYBE loose wire? bad fuse? wire going bad? gas tank sending unit going bad? ugh help!!!! |
Most likely sending unit going bad!
Do a search, it has been discussed before!

Tons of info on it in this forum. Very common problem. I even contacted VDO about it, no luck
Leading Theory: It seems fuel deposits on the wires in the sending unit cause the problem. Try cleaning the wires. If not, it could be the cold solder joint on the back of the gauge itself, or a faulty gauge (less likely), or the sending unit itself. |
i wonder how hard it would be to clean the thin wires?
hmm thanks chris. |
Go fill up with a tank of Shell premium fuel...
It actually worked. I was using Chevron so I thought I'd try a different brand fuel. It stopped bouncing immediately :D
Good luck! ~Paul ____________________ '91 300E, 215K miles |
