Most likely sending unit going bad!

Do a search, it has been discussed before!

Tons of info on it in this forum. Very common problem. I even contacted VDO about it, no luck

Leading Theory: It seems fuel deposits on the wires in the sending unit cause the problem. Try cleaning the wires.

If not, it could be the cold solder joint on the back of the gauge itself, or a faulty gauge (less likely), or the sending unit itself.

Go fill up with a tank of Shell premium fuel...

It actually worked. I was using Chevron so I thought I'd try a different brand fuel. It stopped bouncing immediately

Good luck!
