Hi, I already posted a topic asking how to remove the wooden plate arround the gearknob...

Now I'm in big trouble, I've just received a beautiful wood gear knob and I don't know how to install it and how to take off the old one! I do feel with my fingers that there is something that blocks the gear knob but can't see it, do I need a special tool or do I have to dismantle the half of the car to change that damn gear knob?

It would be wonderfull if anyone could tell me the procedure step by step.
Thanks in advance!

Adam

I've just been able to take off the knob by using a mirror.... But I can't put the new one in!!!
I turn it, and turn it and turn it and I can't make it!

Well, I have been in my garage for about 5hours without any success. I can't even start the car because when I took off the gear knob, I was in D... I can't make it!
Anyone has the "microfiche" (only know the name in french) of the W126 560SEC about the gear knob?

If your still having problems, then what you might want to try is removing wood trim from around the shifter console.then when it is removed all that is left is the black box that indicates what gear your in(e.g.park,reverse,neutral,drive,etc...)remove the 10mm bolts that hold it down and look in through the side and you will see two nuts tightened against each other lossen the bottom one and unscrew the shifter out.You can't replace just the knob alone, you have to replace it with the stem also....Happy Trails jandb125

Succeded!!!!
After 6h of damn work of trying to figure out how to change the gearknob without taking off the blackbox, I finally installed my beautifull wood gear knob. WOOOW!!! It looks great, but I won't do it again in my life!

Would it have been less painfull to depart with a few hard earned dollars and have a professional do the job in about 45 min.?
But what a feeling to have done it yourself.

Corky : Exactly, the feeling is too good when you DIY

And I wouldn't let someone else dismantel the interior of my car
