Rear view mirror
Hi all;
I guess the hot weather has gotten to the rear view mirror on my 89 300SE. The other day the bottom half of the frame around the glass broke into three pieces.I would like to remove the whole mirror assy. from the car but am at a loss to figure out how to do it. Can't find any screws. Any suggestions? |

On the inside of the door, there is a small trim panel which pops off revealing 3 phillips head screws and the plug for the electrics. The little panel is right behind the mirror on the inside. Gently pry off.

Rear View mirror
Thanks for the reply Jeff. I guess my post wasn't very clear about which mirror. The mirror in question is the one on the windshield. Any ideas on that one?

The mirror is mounted on a spring and ball breakaway mount. You can remove it by grasping the stalk and pulling down. Replace is a bit more difficult, needs to be perfectly aligned with the grooves in the header. If you would like to be more elegant, try rocking it to one side or the other and get a small bladed screwdriver in between the ball and groove and release it that way. Personally, I like the gorilla technique.

Thanks Jeff, I used the gorilla method and it popped right off.I would never have figured this out on my own and would probably have done some damage to the trim trying to see how the mirror was mounted. I love this place!!

Now for the fun part...
Putting it back on~! When I replaced mine recently I used a piece of 2X4 about six inches long. Notch one end across the width wide enough for the stalk to lay in and the base resting on the wood. Hold it in position and bump the bottom end with the heel of your hand and it will pop back in!!

Interior mirror interchangable 123-126?
My 560 SEL (126) interior mirrior broke into three pieces as described above. Can I use a W123 mirror to replace it? It seems to have the same spring loaded mount system.
