Low Fuel Bulb in 89 300E?
I'm trying this again since there were no responses to my last post.
My reserve light doesn't work. Already took the sending unit out and cleaned it with no result. The reserve light does not come on when I start the car. There is nothing in the service manual about replacing this, just a bulk symbol showing on the wiring schematic. If I remove the instrument cluster will I find a bulb to replace? Thanks in advance.

The way the light works in my '87 300D is that it will light when you first turn the ignition to ON before cranking. (see, I have to wait for glow plugs to warm up...... )
So I think you should see the low fuel light when the ignition is first turned on. It makes a good bulb test to have everything come on at that time. Ken300D |

Ditto what Ken300D said for my 300E, it lights up with all the other warning lights when you switch on, so I'd suspect a bad bulb.
My car requires disconnecting the speedo from the tranny to be able to pull the cluster... not sure I'd do it just to replace the low-fuel light, as it's just a backup for the guage. Well, actually I probably would, I have a sickness for perfection too. Anyway, there is a replaceable lamp, as I recall it's easy to access once you've pulled the cluster. I believe for your car it is part number 000 545 34 19, which is a 1.2W lamp used in a variety of places. E-mail Phil at PartsShop to make sure. Note that it's not the same as the row of warning lights along the bottom -- those are 2W bulbs.

Thanks, guys. I agree about the light. A little of it is perfection, a little is a reality check on the delusional belief I sometimes have that I can make just one more exit.
My Trip-O-Meter is stuck at 00000 and I've been meaning to pull the cluster anyway to see if the glue on the loose cog remedy will work (why doesn't the owner's manual warn against resetting it while the car is in motion?). This gives me two reasons.
