Respraying a 16V Grill

I have an 86 Euro 16V and the grill was painted black before it was brought over (in the factory). The problem with this is 200, 000 miles later it has become very pitted. I want to have it resprayed black, but the grill does not look very difficult to remove and i could easily strip the remaining scattered paint off of it. I recently asked a body shop what it would cost to have them respray the grill (black metallic) if i took it off myself and stripped it. They said $125. Is that a little much for a 30 minute sprayjob? And is it possible to purchase a kit or just the proper paint color to do this myself? Thanks

Paint job

$125 sounds like a good price. If you've never painted with automotive paint, dont try it, unless you have the right air guns. Using off the shelf paint from an automotive store is the worst thing you could do. There is a lot of overspray with these aerosol cans, and the overspray makes very recognizable dust marks. The dust marks are especially noticable with black paint. If you want it to look like new, have a body shop do it.

Grill painting !!!!!

The thing to do if you are going to spend that kind of $$$$$$$$ is to have the grill powder coated.

if the car is a factory color, you can go to www.towerpaint.com and get it in a spray can. comes out looking very good if you prep the grill first properly, and take your time and paint it right. Is that worth several hours of your time? If so, worst case is you restrip it and you are only out lets say $50.00 for materials and X hours of time. But for $125 I would just have it done, or try to find a place to powder coat it as stated.

Powder coating sounds like a great idea because the paint will virtually never come off, but I didn't know that plastic could be powder coated.

Are you sure that plastic can be powder coated?

If so, I think I'll send out my new grill for powder coating.

are we talking about the grill or the chrome surround? the chrome surround is difficult to paint mainly because it is chrome. if that's what you are talking about then $125 is ok. the plastic grill insert is easily painted. ..

Actually my father imported the car from germany and had the factory paint the grill black to match the black matallic color of the rest of the car. So it was never even chrome, i don't think. And this estimate is for the entire grill including the frame and the emblem. This was all painted with the car originally, so i am used to the black emblem, believe me it looks so damn good. Do most body shops offer powder coating?
