I previously described a noise my right rear axle would make under accereleration and cruise conditions as a knocking that increases/decreases with vehicle speed. It was not consistent at first but now appears after approximately a half hour of driving. My question is can I replace the axle shaft myself or are special tools required, and could it be anything else?

Most are fairly easy to replace if you have the tools required to take off the bolts that hold it to the diff. Some require a special inside spline tool. Why don't you put a signature on your name so we know what kind of car you have??

This model will be a bit more difficult. There is a clip inside the rear center housing holding the axle in. The rear cover has to be removed to access this clip. Unless you have access to a lift you would probably be better off to let a reputable shop do the work.
