I am looking at purchasing a used diesel wagon. Something in the '87 to '90 range. I am curious of the 6 and 5 cylinder engines in these cars. Could someone tell me a little about them? Why the change? When did the change take place(late '87?)? What are the power, torque and MPG differences? Are these engines direct injected or pre-chambered with a glow plug? Are there things to watch out for when buying a used DC diesel? Are there transmissions and other options that should be sought after when getting a DC diesel?

If you are looking for a 300TD, you will be looking at the 6 cyl engine that does have prechamber/glow plug ignition. Be sure to have the engine looked at by a good tech who knows the cars and engines well. They have had their shares of problems, but were good all around if taken care of.
