E220/e320 Fault Codes

I have a UK spec E220 COUPE 1996 Last of the old 124s
Great car but getting info on the 111.960 engine is a problem. It has Bosch HFM injection SYSTEM and a 16 pin diagnostic socket. The following pins are present-1,6,8,10,12,16. I want to read the flash codes on the ECU. Could anyone out there tell me the exact pin identities so I can retreive the codes. The engine management system is probably the same as the U.S. c220 saloon of similar vintage. The diagnostic socket may be the same as the e320 coupe. The haynes diagnostic fault codes manual 3472 chapter 22 lists all the merc fault codes to about 1999,and how to extract them. . Trouble is my car falls between the later 32 socket OBD2 cars and the the good old bosch -jetronic EZL Ignition cars. The haynes manual also states that the ECU output pin on my 16 pin socket is pin3, but THERE IS NO PIN3 on my DIAGNOSTIC socket? Hence the question.

Graeme, why so 'tuff'?

Well, if it is as you say, close to we 'yanks' C220, 111.961 HFM engine, then here's the stuff you wanted:

1 Ground
2
3
4
5
6 SRS/Air Bag
7
8 HFM-SFI <----- That's the pin!
9
10 TN signal
11
12 IRCL
13
14
15
16 Voltage, Ign ON (circuit 15)

There are about 128 ODB and MB codes! No way that I can post them here, sorry.

There is no pin 3 on yours as pin 3 is for USA emmissions
only with a Check Engine warning lamp system,,
However, as Jim F points out, pin #8 is Both HFM and SFI
module, And the E320, 124 chassis being the same system
and diagnostic plug, is prob close to/or same...

Why not give 8 a try and we can compare what you have for codes ....

Thanks JimF and Arthur for your info. You have no idea how hard it is to get technical information about Mercedes vehicles in the UK. I telephoned the sole UK importer recently to get the exact date of manufacture of my vehicle from the chassis number. Not exactly sensitive information you would think, but they insisted on written proof of my ownership and identity before telling me it left the factory in January 1996!!!! Dont get me wrong the cars are great but information is not readily available. Further to your info and for any others with my vintage of car who have consulted the Haynes Diagnostic fault codes manual in vain !!!! it would appear the correct diagram for fault code retrieval on my model is figure 22.10 on page 5 chapter 22 in the section entitled Bosch EZ-L IGNITION MODULE FLASH CODE RETRIEVAL (16 PIN) and not the diagram 22.8 mentioned in the section Bosch Motronic MP6.O/6.1 and HFM/PMS flash code retrieval 16 pin which is otherwise correct for the type of management system and codes. I hope this isnt too confusing, but if you are familiar with this particular manual you will understand what I am driving at. Sounds as if it might be worth getting the the US cd on the e320 coupe. Not exactly the same model e220 v. e320 but I guess there is a certain degree of overlap. Any comments guys? and thanks again. cheers Graeme

My Bosch info shows 50 codes for E220 with HFM-SFI.

Arthur Dalton 08-02-2002 08:34 AM

And my info shows 50 at pin 8 for e320...
so, maybe...

SB... do you see/have a code comparison ...e220/e320 ??

Arthur

The Bosch info is for all models. It has E220, I would have E320 a number of different ways. Email me and I'll tell you of a few. steveb@atlantic.net

Actually, I just double checked the list and sure enough almost all the codes have doubles or triples. I was looking at impulse codes. If I go to HHT codes the the multiples are expanded to a huge number because at 99 it turns to hexadecimal.

I have the flash for 124 HFM e320 and thought if they related to your e220 info, I would send the poster a zip...
I have no idea on UK systems, but might be some help to him.

Guess we are fortunate that we have such info access.

Thanks
Arthur
