500SEC just won't start

My 1985 500SEC just decided to not start a couple of weeks ago and I am at my witts end to figure it out. I am getting good spark to the top of the distributor but not to the plugs. I installed a new cap & rotor, still no start. Checked my ignition timing-OK, I can smell gas out the tailpipe so must be getting fuel. If my timing chain jumped a tooth would it act like this? It just turns over & over with absolutely no sign of combustion of firing in any cylinder. I am thinking that maybe my distributor went bad?! How often do these things fail? Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance,..Brant

You got me confused here. If your ignition timing checks out OK how can you not be getting spark to the plugs .
If you are getting no spark to your plugs then your problem is obviously ignition related.

even if it had jumped time by what you stated you would still have spark at plugs unless all your wires went south witch is doubtful.......

Sorry to create confusion,..what I meant about the ignition timing is that I checked the distributor points to #1 coil post at Top Dead Center. Also on the 1985 500SEC isn't the timing somewhat computer controlled? I also checked compression last week and on a COLD engine it was 150 psig and a few weeks ago I checked it at 170psig on a very warm engine. These numbers seem good to me. I did notice that the little plastic insulating piece on the side of the distributor where the green double wire comes in from the ignition control unit was busted a little but the wires still seem to be intact. I am leaning towards a faulty distributor but wonder if there are any continuity checks or resistance checks I can do to determine this? Thanks, Brant

You mentioned the "green wire's" to the distributor, that is the control line, pull the plug from the distributor, use an ohm meter and check the reading on the distributor terminals, its supposed to be 600+- 100 ohms, if the nominal value is attained renew the green control line (which is suspect) if not, renew the distributor. There are some other checks that can be done, try the above first.
