85 CD electrical anomoly

It's haunted! My 85 300CD horn did not work (who needs one anyway?)...fuses OK - no other electrical probs-then for no apparent reason the horn becomes operative and simultaneously the passenger front window ceases to function (won't roll up) and the driver side rear (tiny) window won't roll down. Fuses are all intact (visually). Nothing seems to be disconnected under the hood...Arrrgh! Where do I begin?

HI Mike

Check them fuses again, real close this time! The fact you have the two windows that are inopertive tell me it is a fuse without a doubt. Mercedes wires the window cross ways. LF & RR on one fuse and RF & LR on another. As for the horn. Can't say I have a Silver Bullet for that one, sorry.

Fasthair,

Many thanks! I located the proper fuse, and I promise that it looked just fine - HOWEVER - I changed it anyway and behold - both windows worketh again! I'm as happy as a dead pig in the sunshine! Still can't figure out the horn, but since it is now working, guess I won't worry about it...thanks again.

Your horn may be intermittent due to worn slip rings between the steering wheel and column. Not a terribly difficult operation to replace, parts are about $74.00 and requires complete disassembly of the steering wheel. Unless you need the horn to pass a State inspection you can wait until the horn completely ceases to function before repairing.

Mike try new fuses, just replace them all. They seem to break down after some time, even though they look OK they can give you intermittent troubles. The 8 amp fuses seem to be the worst, they get real thin in the middle almost as if they were stretched.Good luck

Kyle,

Many thanks for the note...I may get ambitious and have a close look at the ring you referenced...it seems taht parts for these diesels are not all that hard to find...I had no idea what I was missing until I got my first one...what a cool machine!

Mike
