Haasman,

Sorry for the delay in my reply. I re-installed the sway bar with the car on the ground. (easy access for me because I have my front bumper off.) It went on fine, and did not affect the ride height -- meaning that the ride height is correct.

So the problem definately seems to be caused by tightening the sway bar while the car is up on jacks.

Hope this was of some help.

well, that's fine, tv, but I DID NOT remove a sway bar, AND the suspension was depressed to keep the springs from decompressing ( as I stated before, I did not use a spring compressor). So, it's still possible I justcneed the rear shocks. Of course, there is that little matter of the stretched dust boot...

Piotr,

While our cars had similar symptoms, we clearly had 2 completely different problems. The fact that your dust boots don't fit is a bit of a conundrum. As you indicated, it certainly does point to the front as the source of your problem rather than the rear.

Post back any new developments -- this topic is of great interest to me.

well, I decided to revisit this post due to some other posts of similar nature. I finally replaced the rear shocks (yes, they were Sachs), and that did not affect (change) the ride height. About 10K mi on new struts (front) did not "settle" the ride either. Car continues to ride high. The handling problems were fixed with new tires, but now it seems the outside edge of the rear tires wear out very fast. all mechanics tell me that the car height up front is normal.

When I find time I'll see if I can do two things:
A) re-install the sway bar (just loosen up and retighten all fasteners with wheels on the ground ), and
B) remove/replace the front spring pads.

I'll post the results

Piotr,

If you're going to go through the trouble of changing the spring pads, you might as well install shorter springs. Just my 0.02.

Okay! There are three different Bilstein shocks for your car.

Comfort, Heavy Duty and Sport. The sport shocks are different length because they are made for the lowered suspension systems as found on the sportline or with modified geometry and shorter springs.

It could be that the terminology is confusing the issue. Yes, the Sport shocks are indeed Heavy Duty, but they are not the right length for the standard suspension cars.

You should ENSURE exactly which shocks you put on the car.

Good luck,

Thanks guys---

I was careful with tightening the lower control arm bushings with it on the ground... but I missed on the swaybar.

Just wanted to give some closure for a future person searching.....

Struts appear to be fine. Suspension shifted giving a huge amount of toe. Corrective action will be to have the car aligned Monday.

Yes you should replace the rear shocks first and then start worring if it drives funny. Old rule always replace front and rear at same time. (uhh unless you have good working SLS)
