I notice there are little oil leak under the car between the back engine and the transmission joint. I suspect this is the
reason for the engine oil lost. (about 3 liters for every 1500km with no white smoke from the exhaust) Is this a common problem for this model ? and What are the part need to be replace ? BTW, Can this be a week end task ? Thanks in advance |

Also, I have never seen a leak that is a drop on a driveway cause a oil loss.

I think it is the transmission oil (red),
but I can't notice any transmission oil lost from the dipstick. However, the engine oil lost is significant. (as I described earlier). Can the engine oil leak from the engine and transmission joint ? I really to have fix this because it is expensive to refill the engine oil. Thanks. |

If the drop that you are seeing is red it ATF not engine oil and will have not effect on the engine oil loss. Yes engine oil can leak from this area as can transmission oil. A few drops of oil on the ground does not account for the amount of oil loss that you are reporting. Engine is most likely burning the oil. If you think that the cost of oil is expensive then you probaly do not want to know the cost of the repairs that may be required. |
well,If the engine oil can leak from same
area, I would like to get it confirm and rectify. Repair is one time cost but refill is forever. Just wonder, if the engine is burning the oil, How can I confirm that ? Is it true I should see some smoke from the exhaust ? In my case, there isn;t any smoke. Many Thanks. AL |
If the oil is coming in through the
headgasket, you run the risk of a hydrolock which will probably bend a connecting rod and cause other problems - none of which are cheap. I recommend finding the cause of the oil usage. I am not a mechanic but I would think that a thorough compression test would be a good start. My 300SD uses 0 quarts between 2500-mile changes. At one time (about $8,500 ago) it used 1 quart per 1,000, then 1 quart per 700 miles, etc. |

As I stated before a few drops of oil does not account for the loss of 3.0l per 1500Km If you were leaking this much oil the entire undercarrige of you car would be dripping wet and the exhaust would be covered with oil makeing a very bad burnt oil odor. As far as diag. of this is concerned The first order of buisnes is to remove the sparkplugs and inspect for the pressence of oil residue on the plugs. Then procede with a compression test and a cylinder leakage test. the CLT is much more accurate than the compression test. If nothing is discovered with these test then have the clyinders inspected with a bore scope. It is possible that all you need is valve guide seals. If the compression test and the CLT show up negitive and there is oil residue on the spark plugs I would replace these seals. |

I have an 89 190E 2.0 that uses a whole schwack of oil. I freaked when I first got it, but then I looked in the owners manual. Depending on how much the engine is stressed (and in hilly Pennsylvania, the poor little 2.0 is VERY stressed), "normal" oil consumption can be up to 1.5 liters per 1000km. My car uses about a quart per 600 miles, so I'm well within "normal". Even though I use so much oil, the car doesn't smoke. This is not to say that oil consumption is *desirable*... but it is, according to my owner's manual, acceptable. |

I send it for inpection today, and
problem seem to be due to some harden valve seal and and some play at the valve guide. However, my mechanic proceed to replace all the valve seal and would like to monitor the oil consumption again. Anyway, If problem persist, then I have no choice but to replace all the valve and valve guide. Thanks Corky. AL |
I have a 1990 190E 2.6. Had the same problem with oil loss. Took the car to the mechanic and he replaced the valve seals. He said the old ones were too hard already. Cost was $180. Shop was not MB, but mechanic is familiar with MB and BMW. Oil loss was reduced, but did not disappear completely. Hope this helps you.

Thanks JMike, Mine is the same, the
consumption reduce but not disappear totally. Anyway, I will live with it since no top up require until the next service, ie every 5000-6000km. |
