Hello all:

I'm looking into buying a used Mercedes (late 80's model). One in particular that I've found is the E-300 class. Here's the write up on it:

MERCEDES--'85 300CD, auto dsl, 2 drs, sun rf, AC, lthr, loaded. Excel cond. $5500/neg.

What do you all think about this? I would appreciate any suggestions on buy/not buy also any forwarnings about maintainance, so on.

thanks,

My $.02 advice would be to get a good and reputable mechanic to go over the car for you pre-sale. I made a biiig mistake by buying a MB without anyone looking her over. Luckily I got out of that one and into a much more reliable car!!

The mechanic I use took 20-30 minutes and did some cursory checks of the systems (drivetrain, a/c, electronics, etc.), listened for undesirable sounds and looked for wear on parts/components that shouldn't be worn or, if they are, how much it'll be to fix.

You can also take the car to a MB dealer near you and, for about $90-150, they'll check out the car as well. I can't say if this is generally a good or bad move personally. I chose an independent.

In my case, I needed a new a/c blower so I had my mechanic give me a quick quote on it and I had the price reduced to compensate for that.

Buyer beware!!

Good luck to you.

If the pre-purchase inspection goes well, the coupe is a great car and is in high demand. The nice ones sell great...Last year, one with 70,000 orig miles and perfect service history sold for $11,000 at my shop. Just FYI

This car has several problems that can exist and there are a lot of milage related problems( ac hoses and compressor) that may exist..make sure the owner has done milage services and that the service records do not show that problems exist that nothing has been done about.
I have a 1983 300CD that I will be selling after finding a replacement vehicle. I am currently looking at a 300CE to buy my car has 128k miles and has been well maintained if you are not able to purchase the one you are looking at feel free to contact me.

If the car has received all of the regular maintenance, it can be extremely reliable. I also think this car is fun to work on. *However*, if it has been neglected, watch out. When the small/regular things go wanting, they seem to lead to significantly larger things that can sour a person on the vehicle.

Good advice is to have a skilled and knowledgeable mechanic go over the vehicle for you. I do much of my own work, however, on a purchase, I always like to get the opinion of someone whose skills are significant and whose observations I think I can trust.

Good luck.
