I'm going to be an S class owner!
 

I spoke to the owner and the mechanic and we are done at $8800. I am very happy. I'll send him a check today to hold the car and now all I have to do is wait until my tranfer clears the bank to get the certified check for the balance!

I should be motoring in my 88 SE sometime next week with a little luck! I am so excited! At 35 I feel like a child on Christmas Eve!

I want to thank all of you who have taken the time to answer my questions over the last month or so. I feel like I am walking into Mercedes ownership with an army of help behind me and I can't wait.

Congrats Ron......I know the feeling. I bought my '90 420 SEL a month ago for $7995 and according to my mechanic, I stole the thing at that price. All I've had to do to it is add a set of tires ( Dunlop SP Sport A2's ), set of GGBailey custom floormats and replaced the front wheel bearings.

All told, I'm in about $8800 for a car that cost $50K+ brand new !! And it doesn't look alot different than when it WAS new. :)

I'm sure you'll love yours as well, so best of luck with it.

I know what you mean...I got my 560 SEL for an almost unheard of $2500 bucks and the only thing I really HAD to replace was a $14 center console window switch that didn't light up when I got it a year ago. Soon as I got her I got the "bug" and started switching out and replacing a lot of stuff to make sure she ran as new as ever (I still keep the old parts because they still work!). You'll see what I mean when you get it and welcome to the "S" family:D

P.S. Although I was 34 when I got my baby, I'm 35 the same as you going on 36 next month and STILL feel like a kid at X-Mas when I drive her as well as when I'm tinkering and stuff with it!

Congratulations on your "new" purchase. I felt the same way that you do with every used Mercedes that I have ever bought.

We must be the only bunch of owners who get so excited about buying a 10-15-20 year old car. It is a reflection of the kind of cars that Mercedes are.

You don't see a Buick, or a Caddy or an Audi or even a Bimmer owner get so child-like excited with the purchase of an old car (unless it happens to be a really... REALLY old vintage car). As I tell anyone who cares to listen: you take care of these babies and they will last forever.

I rather buy a used Benz than a new anything else. :D

I've been watching and posting in your search from the very beginning.

I'm sure you're going to love this car. The W126 is considered to be one of the best cars MB ever built, and the 3.0 liter SOHC inline 6 is a well-regarded, reliable engine that has a history of longevity and durability.

Take my advice - review all of your records to see when the last maintenance was performed on all of the fluids and filters.

The manual will tell you to change the oil and filter every 7,500 miles (which seems waaaay too long), and change the plugs, filters, and transmission fluid every 30,000 miles.

Basically, all of the maintenance is carried out in miles, except two items, which are done on time - brake fluid and coolant replacement. Change your brake fluid every 2 years and coolant every 3 years.

If you have no solid record of any of the above maintenance items, do them now so you can start off with a clear conscience and a clean slate, and then continue with the mileage intervals in the maintenance booklet to keep your maintenance history correct and organized.

And I love how a Mercedes that was $45,000 originally costs LESS to repair than many late-model Japanese cars. (gotta love how hard cramped FWD engine compartments are to work on!)

G- Benz you continue to crak me up! "s" lol. Welcome Ron! I did not get a deal on my sdl but I am still happy with it. I bought mine for 5k and put 8,500 into it but it is restored now and I don't have to worry about bad parts anymore. I will be driving mine for a loong time.
