Could someone please give me the proper procedure for adjusting the steering gear box on a 1985 380SL. I have some play in the steering wheel and have been able to eliminate some ot it by adjusting the gear box. However, I am afraid to adjust it to tightly and cause some sort of problem. What is the proper procedure for adjusting and how tight is to tight?

We take out the sector and use a torqueometer that measures in very small amounts.(in lbs) This device allows the measurement of rotational force. The static force for the unloaded piston is usually about 3-5in/lbs. When you start adjusting for the output shaft, you will set it to about 12-15in/lbs in the center of its travel.
