radiator change question...fan shroud removal
i want to change my radiator on my 1990 300SE and i need to remove the fan shroud first, but i notice that the fan is inside the rim of the shroud. Does anyone know how I remove the shroud so I can get the radiator off? Do I need to remove the fan itself first? if so, can someone tell me how i go about doing this? Sorry, but im new here and cant find this topic in search. Thanks very much in advance!!

I changed the radiator on my 560SEL a couple of years ago and in my limited experience, it was far easier than the same task on a domestic auto.
Step 1: remove the four 10 mm bolts that attach the fan and remove the fan. Doing so makes the remaining steps go quickly. Good Luck |

fan
Hi,
Not sure about your car, but after removing the shrowd, which I can remove from my car without taking the fan off, you may have enough clearance to get the radiator off. I would consider taking the fan off to have enough clearance. I'll check my manual and see what it says. They don't list the removal of the fan as a peliminary step to removing the radiator. I would thinks as previously posted removing the fan would make life easier. good luck Joel |

The engine fan can be very tough to get off without the correct tool. You would pull the clips on the shroud and pull it upwards, then set it back on the fan blades. There is one central bolt which attaches the fan to the fan hub, it's an 8mm allen head, there is a tool MB sells that makes it easier to get on and off. On the fan hub, there are 2 holes drilled in to the back side, either one of which can be used to hold the hub from turning. On the aluminum housing of the fan bearing bracket, there are 2 notches cast in, more on the drivers side of the bracket. MB sells a tool, like a long steel rod with a bend on the end, the bent part is placed between the 2 notches, then while turning the central fan bolt (counterclockwise), the tip of the rod end is rubbed against the back of the fan hub, you want the tip to engage in to the hub and hold it from turning. After removing the bolt, the fan can be wiggled off the hub and the shroud and fan assembly both can be removed. When reinstalling, the central bolt is torqued to 40nm. Lets hope your central bolt isn't overtightened. As you can imagine it gets to be a big mess if the allen head part of the bolt gets rounded out.

So the fan on my 300se is not bolted in as posted above by 4 bolts? And I guess youre saying the fan does indeed have to be removed first to take the shroud off right?

To take the shroud off, yes, if you intend the shroud to be in 1 piece. You probably could get the radiator out without removing the fan and shroud, as has been mentioned already.
