My 93’ 300E is currently having a intermittent problem where the car ‘clunks’ at certain times.

Basically when I let up on the gas and then get into it again I get a pretty strong banging noise and a rough engage of power. The first time it did it I felt someone had rear-ended me. Although it mainly happens during a turn I have also experienced it while going straight.

All the rubber bushings have been checked out and are O.K. and the dealer I who look at it has not been able to get it resolved. Could this be the transmission and/or the limited-slip?

BTW - The vehicle is a sportline model but I don't think that matters....

Does it make any difference if you are shifting the tranny manually? Does the car have ASR? If your sitting in your driveway or parking garage...when you go from 1st to reverse or vise versa do you get a similar clunking noise? The R to D clunking has been known to be flex disc related.

Not a big fan of shifting manually so I don't really do it and as such I cannot be sure if it would do it then as well.

I know I should know this but I am not sure if it does have ASR ( Out of town now otherwise I would look. ) I don't believe so though.

It could be a vacuum problem with the modulator. The caps like to get old and crack.

On this model car, the transmission has "bands" that operate in 1 & 2 gears. The transmission has an automatic adjuster for 2nd gear. These early auto adjusters sometimes fail & will cause this type of problem at 15-25 mph w/slowing down & then speeding back-up without stopping.

Thanks for the Info... I am having the car brought into the shop this weekend to see if it can finally be resolved.

I do remember having the Bands worked on at some point. This seemed to lessen the times it happened. I might need to get them replaced instead of tightened.
