Low oil level light on
 

I just changed the oil in the '99 E300 and checked the level this morning before heading to work and the oil level was between the high and low mark on the stick. The 'Low Oil level' Light came on while driving. This sensor had been replaced recently and the question is could the new sensor be bad too or has anybody any suggestions as to what is going on?

I may be stating the obvious but be sure you don't have leak, cross-threaded drain bolt, loose oil filter, etc. Possible you did missed something and lost oil.

Or, could be sensor, not sure where located?

Used a topsider, ran engine about an hour after change and saw no leaks around filter area. Wish it had a pressure gauge like my '94. I just put in about 3/4 qt. at lunch and the warning didn't come on. Maybe the car doesn't like oil levels below 7 qts.

I've had a car that would turn the light on within 3/4 of a quart or so. Then others that never went on. Probably just sensitive.

My car has approxiamtely 50,000 miles on it. I love that car!! 230hp, all-wheel drive, 4-speed automatic, ABS, climate control, you name it.

My dad had bought it new in 1992, he started having trouble getting in and out of it, too low. So I bought it from him (he went to Acura 3.2TL, thought about the benz but for the money he was sold on the Acura, tough to argue). Been in the family and babied since new.

Took it to Northern Maine a few winters ago for Christmass family visit, just me and him. Ran 100mph all day, smooth as silk, heavy car, not blistering from a stop probably 0-60 in mid 7's or so, but on the highway it cooks. That horizontal 6 is smooth as butter and full of torque. The all-wheel drive is unflappable. My dad was one of the first to get one, no-one knew what it was. He loved going out in the winter snow and pulling up to caddy's and the like and leaving them in the dust.

What a nice car, tight in the back two seats (look like seats anyway), but what a great driver.

Been off the road for a couple of years, I start every month and drive around the block a few times. I think I'll register soon and put about 1000 - 1500 miles on it per year.

Oil level sensor
 

Try the electrical connection to the level sensor it may be corroded & worn, the oil level sensor is in the sump.

Check the manual for the description of what the light means. On my cars the light typically comes on when you are about a quart down. Which corresponds to about half way between full and low on the dipstick. The oil sensor is activated when the oil reaches about 80C, as its level changes significantly with temperature. So, if you drive for ten to fifteen minutes and the light comes on with the level on the dipstick about half way between full and low, I think the system is working fine. Good luck, Jim

Someone of these engines (not sure about your specific model) run up to 8 1/2 quarts. Check the manual for specific # of quarts.
