Possible to read "check engine" light problem? W210
I have a '98 W210, with 104k. At 100k the 'check engine' light came on while idling. The light turned off 2 days later. I took the car on a 4k cross country trip. Car ran like a dream, 30-32mpg @ 80-85 mph. And the light was on & off during of the trip. (It is now always on)
Is there a way I can check the cause of the light? My other cars will display the computer code, if the light come on. Does Mercedes do this also? Anyone else have this problem? Thanks Jim |
Could be as simple as a gap cap seal, but more likely than not the problem is a O2 sensor.

Auto Zone will do it for free, or you can buy a code scanner for about <$150. Do a search on OBDII or OBD2 and start there. Also good info here -Continental Imports site.

I'll check the gas cap. And see my Autozone store. I did search for OBDII eariler and found some interesting scanners that use your PALM. http://www.auterraweb.com/
$219. I haven't found one for $150. o2 sensors- I'm assuming the scanner will tell me which of the 4 o2 sensors are bad. The front 2 are $140 each. I've put o2s in my other cars and if your willing to splice them in, the Generic Bosch 4 wire, is less than 1/2 that price. Thanks for the suggestions! I'm planning to keep this car for 300k, so a OBDII scanner might be a good addition to my tool collection. Jim |
