87 300 E trip odometer problem-305K miles
 

I had a trip odometer that did not return to zero when the stem was pushed. Then the odometer stuck and clicked. I took it to my local speedo shop which was recommended by more than two MB shops. They took it out twice but never got it fixed. The third time the owner got a speedo from another car and put in less worn parts.

When the speedo is out of the car and I push the reset lever, the trip odo goes to zero. With the speedo in the cluster and when I push the trip stem, nothing happens. The stem does not have noticable play and does not seem worn down as to not push the odo reset lever enough. I even put some washers between the lever and stem to allow for more movement. All to no benefit.

Any suggestions?

I pulled the instrument cluster using the OEM Benz tools and sent the speedo to N Hollywood. They fixed it for $115 and I reinstalled it. Works ok so far. Only trick is to pull cable behind the gas pedal while pushing the instrument cluster back in.
