EXTREMELY Frustrated Now!
Stalling -- STILL
From my post on the 18th: "My 16V had all the classic problems -- intermittent starting/stalling problems (only when warm), finally no start or idle. I did the following: 1. New injectors and seals 2. New cap and rotor 3. New Fuel Pump Relay 4. New air temp sensor 5. New OVP fuse (tho' it was not blown) 6. New Idle Speed Valve Seemed to work fine for about a couple weeks, then the stalling started happening again. Just for kicks, I unplugged the 2-pin connector for the Idle Valve and fired the car back up. It idled like a charm! Went in to look at my CD and found where the 2 wires go: a) red/yel -- directly to the OVP b) red/wht -- to CIS-E Control Unit --> red/yel to the OVP I've got the OVP yanked and am ready to order a new one. Will let you all know the outcome (fingers crossed)." Well, installed the NEW OVP tonight and took 'er out for a spin. 8 stop signs and no stalling (tho' the tach dropped to almost stall, then came up to idle after depressing the clutch and releasing the accelerator). Pulled into the garage, shut 'er down and waited for about 15-minutes. Tried to start it up and got chug-chug-chuggin' (barely idling). Pressed the gas to raise the rpm and it stalled upon release. Continued stalling the next 5 starts. Pulled the Idle Valve 2-pin connector and she fired right up; smooth idle. Took her for 2 separate spins -- no problems. Upon release of the accelerator (after depressing the clutch), I noticed the rpm's smoothly returned to idle (no overshoot towards stalling). I'm at a loss -- please HELP!!! Thanks All, Brian16V |
I am wondering if your fuel system is simply dirty?
I had great experience with the double techron dose. Have you done any fuel system cleaning like this? Also, have you cleaned the air mass sensor plate and surrounding area. I read in another post this helped someone with similiar problems. J |
This problem is almost always related to the AIR FLOW POSITION SENSOR! There are many posts on this problem. BACK 10-12 years ago we replaced these sensors(with housing) on every car we sold!! Benzmac had that problem with his 16V as well.

Just in case...
This happened on my miata and I went through all the motions trying to figure out. For six months..It had no set pattern and when I floored the gas it would almost stall out until I let off on and off bucking the whole way. Thought it was water in the gas, ign coil, wires, everything. This type of vehicular "reaction" typically comes from an air flow meter. Mine had a freyed wire that was simply touching a couple of others. I found it myself by getting so frustrated, I decided to take the whole $%5! car apart to find it. 1st choice was the wire harness going to the air flow meter and sure enough..solved the problemo...

Is this a problem on the M103 also? It sounds a lot like what I'm having.

Yes the air flow sensor problem can & does happen on all CIS-S engines!!

Uh OH!!
Will the spraying of carb/ injector cleaner into the air flap harm the sensor?
