fault codes
I'm new to benz with a recent purchase of a 95 - E320, 160k-Km (100,000 miles there abouts). Very nice car but with less than 1000 kms added to it, the fickle "check engine" light has turned on.
I'm trying to get the skinny on reading the error codes and their interpretation. My first visit to the Benz dealer was interesting, but he imformed me that without his $150k reader I would not be able to read the codes. My investigation around the engine compartment, infront of the battery, lies a box that looks strikingly similar to my 1989 240 Volvo's readout. Simply ground out the appropriate area (#2 or #6 if memory serves), press the button between 1 and 3 seconds, and read the led flashes. Is this the same as the E320? If so what are the code sequences? I have tried to locate the various information in this board, but have been unable to locate the "archives" or a good explanation of how to get the sequence rolling. If you have any advice, please drop me a line or post. Thanks in advance. |

Your car has a built-in led/sw at the diagnostic plug for code retieval... you don't ground/jump anything..
Turn on key and push button - hold for 2/3 secs, release and count the reply code flashes--- continue on til all are flashed and original repeats One flash is No Codes Stored.. [ that will not be the case on yours as the CE is on, meaning a fault has been detected] |

success ?
First...thanks for the fast response Arthur Dalton. I can see by the forum that you are one of the gurus here and I am thankful for any and all your help.
Now comes the silly questions. I just went out, turned the key on (not starting the E320), and pressed the button beside the led in the led/sw. The led flashed 5 times and then stopped, but did not return anymore cycles or new codes. Is everything correct or should I literally have the vehicle motor idling. Again, Thanks in advance. |

You have to do the process over again after each code is retrieved..
You know there are no more when the first reply flash is repeated.. Code 5 has detected an EGR fault Check the archives for plugged EGR pipe on 104 eng. Common [ [ go to DIY section and look at Steve B article] I also have posted EGR system remedy testing procedures/diagnosis.... |

Thanks AD, I will attempt a dusting and cleaning / reaming this week end and report back success.
Best regards. |

Actually the basics to code retrieval are exactly the same for these impulse systems as the Volvo impulse systems. With Volvo the wire for grounding and the light were incorporated into the test system. With the MB one must fashion his own LED light and grounding cable. Once wired, it works just like the Volvo system.
The prewired button on your car allows this prewired system to check only the DM (diagnostic module). if you wish to view the HFM (engine management) or CC/ISC (throttle control) or AB (airbag), or AC one must pick the right hole and do the wiring such that a 2-3 second grounding activity will excite the code. Read one after another until the first code is repeated and then the codes are erased in similar fashion to Volvo with a 6-8 second grounding signal.

As SB has pointed out , there are other diagnostic modules on your car that can be accessed at the different sockets with the aid of a simple led/sw tool. This is OBD1 system and quite good.
The built-in one only accesses the emmisions system one , but that is the one that trips the CE light... If you would like a copy of the diagnostic box pin printout, email me and I will send you one.. A home-made tool is nice to have , as your car is the last flash code system before OBDII, which requires a scanner.. There are simple instructions for tool in archives [ about $5/parts--RS] |

The saga continues
Mr. Dalton (Arthur)...got your schematic for the led light....very simple. Thanks
Where do I go to get the operations / instructions. I would assume "any other color" banana plug to the specifice hole, ground out red and black banana plug. Before I try, I will ask. Additionally, where do I find the error code descriptions for the various responses. THanks in advance. |
