Regarding that black piece that is attached to the end of the SS heating coil in the windshield washer reservoir, it is not a mounting bracket. Rather, it is a passive thermostat; I believe it contains a gel or wax that interrrupts and/or allows the flow of hot coolant when the temperture in the reservoir is outside the range. It cost me about $35 retail from a MB Dealer to get a replacement for that "thermostat." Part number was 126-830-07-84. It takes a bit of work to remove the ss coil from the washer reservoir; the thermostat is held in place by a couple of screws as I remember. Anyway, it solved the problem of overheated washer solution for me during Spring, Fall, and Winter. Its not too bad in Summer either.

Thats a nice touch having a heated windscreen washer bottle. Ive never heard of that on a car before here in the UK. My 190 has heated washer jets, as do most cars in the UK, however thats only any good at stopping the water actually in the pipes from freezing!

I have found that with the right windshield solvement, the heated fluid removes smashed bugs on the windshield better than cool fluid.

Thanks DHA the number checked out at the dealer (126-830-07-84) for the replacable temp control unit, its on the way along with two new seals for where the heat exchanger penetrates the reservoir lid. This should help with alcohol evaporation complaints (seal ring part #140-997-06-45). I will see if they fit when they get here. And post the new temp results.

O.K. the new temp control valve(126-830-07-84) was installed today and the washer fluid temp is now staying at 85 to 90 degrees. the other number (140-997-06-45) are for o-rings needed to install the new valve, not seals for where the heat exchanger penetrates the washer fluid reservoir lid, the number for the seals/grommets to do that job is 010-997-13-81.

Got my old bucket up to operating temp and checked the washer fluid with a probe thermometer. 180F ! I ain't paying 35 bucks for this thermovalve gizmo so I took the coil out, removed the top water hose and connected the bottom hose in it's place, bypassing the unit. I suppose the AC controller will burn up now, or maybe the EZL will short out the transmission modulator or something stupid.

The heat of the washer fluid comes from absorbing heat of the coolant. Whats next, bypassing the radiator.

The part cost me $28.00 at the dealer, I'll bet Phil can get it cheaper. I just didnt want to wait and I was working two blocks from the dealer, let us know if your bypass has any ill effects. The fluids movement is somewhat restricted thru the thermovalve, and then when its up to temp there is no flow thru it, so if I were removing this I would plug it to simulate a condition that the system operates within.

It was literally boiling my washer fluid out of the tank! In addition, when I removed the coil, it had blue dye encrusted all over it! I don't think allowing the engine coolant to circulate should have any ill effects, but we'll see. I've been driving cars here since 1965 and never needed a heated washer system or a "fuel cooler" or headlamp washers. Other makes of cars seem to do very well without all these gizmos all over the world. It still seems a little extravogant to me! But, if it makes someone feel better to have them then it's OK by me. These things have no value in my climate.
