engine noise

I'm just trying to be sure before I spend the money for new lifters. Is it typical for lifters to make a ticking noise at idle and become very loud at higher rpm's?
Plus, how do determin what size shims to use?

I guess I have one more question. What is the best method for removing the spring clip which holds the lifter in the rocker?

thanks,

Jim

It is possible that you have a worn lobe on the camshaft causing the noise. You need to check this before assuming that it's lifters making the noise. To replace the lifters you need to remve the cam bearing brackets and then push the lifters out of the rocker arms. The snap ring does not come out. You should also check for wear on the cotact surface of the rocker arms. Usually the shims between the rocker arm and the valve are reused with now problem.

Thanks for your help. I did check the lobes and they appeared to ok. Is there a way to visually tell if the lifters are bad? I was starting with lifters because they are the least expensive.

Thanks,
Jim
