Angry slk230 headlight flasher

my slk 230 wont flash the headlights with the lever, but if I set the light switch on dash to fog lights on then the lever when pushed down will turn on the high beams? is there a point at witch I could check with an ohm meter to see if the switch on the columb is bad or the one on the dash is do you have the capability to send a schematic of the circuit? or at least talk me through the testing proceedure tnx in advance..

then the lever when pushed down will turn on the high beams?

Do you mean "down" as though indicating a left turn, or down like away from the steering wheel?

When you "flash" the high beams you are should be pulling toward you, if you push the stalk away from you the high beams should be "on." Regardless of 'if the fogs are on' and only pushing the stalk away or toward you works, the stalk is probably bad. However, don't be confused with the Fogs being on...if the fogs are on then you flash or turn the high beams on the fogs are shut off while your in high beam mode...in which case you might mistake the highs as working when your just seeing your normal lights in which case a relay/fuse might be bad on the Fogs. Confused yet? Sorry.

when I pull the stalk twards me it wont flash the lights, when I push the stalk down it wont put the high beams on steady! when I place the dash light knob to the right witch is the fog light setting the high beams can come on and indicate on the instrument pannel light, there must be a point at witch I can use a volt/ohmmeter, to check for continuity can anyone tell me this point, or send a schematic of the circuit so that I can find the prob. tnx in advance

The first click to the right is parking lights, the high beams will not come on continuously in this position, but they should always work via the "flash" position. The second detent to the right is the headlight "ON" position, in this position the highbeams will come on with the stalk pushed forward.
For foglights, the headlight switch position can be either the first or second detent to the right with the switch knob pulled out to the first detent. The second detent out is both the front fogs and single rear foglight.
This system is a bit more complex than you might believe. I could probably get the wiring diagram for the combination switch itself, this you could probably test with an ohmmeter to prove it is a bad switch (or not).
What year is the car?

David:
On the connector from the multifunction switch, check continuity between pin 2 (white wire) and pin 11 (black with yellow and green). The power supply to pin 11 is fuse 32, so check that if there is no power on the body side of that connector, but an ohmmeter in the socket (switch) side of 2 and 11 will tell you if the switch is OK, it uses these 2 wires for both constant highbeam and flash mode. You can also check the fuses under the left panel next to the light switch itself, I can't find a fuse assignment for those fuses. If the switch and fuses chaeck out OK, I would begin to suspect the lamp control module, which is also the headlight switch.

Gilly, thanks for the info. I'me driving a 1997 slk230 4 cyl turbo fuel injected rocket, I'de realy like to know where I can get a good manual on this cars electrics? as the shops around here cant even change the oil sooooo I turnd to the internet, Ive maintained a 38' silverton twin engine withits own generator, at least I've got good drawings for that beast, this cant be more complicated than that, just crammed into a smaller hole, I know the imposible takes a littel longer!!!

David:
If you just want the diagrams, i would contact mercedes (1 800 FOR MERCedes) during "regular business hours" ( I dunno, middle of the day?) and ask to speak to someone regarding technical literature. The diagrams they refer to as "ETM's" (electrical troubleshooting manuals) but are actually just diagrams. Your SLK is referred to by it's model number, which is a 170. So ask how much the ETM's are for a 170. To go beyond that to the DM's (diagnostic manuals) is a great expense, stuff is spread out for different models, so you end up with volumes and volumes and only a fraction of it pertains to the 170.
The problem you may run into with electrical diagrams is many of the wires go to control modules, and don't really explain functions of all the wires. But it would of course help in certain circumstances, like checking this switch you want to check and for checking just the wires. I bet it will be over a couple hundred bucks to get the ETM's for your car though, there are 2 or 3 volumes.
