How to get key copied?
 

I have a 1990 420 SEL.
Previous owner lost key and replace ignition instead of going to dealer and getting another key (!!). So the VIN number doesn't match up to get a new key. How can I get a new key (Who will duplicate them?)
I can provide proof of ownership, etc.

Gotta go to the dealer with your proof of ownership and VIN. They'll overnight you a new key.

The problem is that by VIN number, his key will only work in the door. If I am correct, he has the original cut for the doors, and a new cut for the ignition. No idea if MB "knows" the new cut he has for the ignition.
I believe there are a few places that can just do a duplicate on this complex style of key, no idea how you go about locating such a place.
The "right" thing to do would be to order and install the correct lock cylinder for the car, it's not that bad of a job to do just the cylinder, and it'll come with a new (correct) key

The dealer? I didn't buy this car from a dealer. Also will they copy the key or get a new one based on the vin. If they get a new one based on the vin it won't work in my car because the ignition isn't the original one.

Do you use a key for the doors? Maybe you can take them a tumbler and they could figure it out. You know you should order a tumbler for the ignition from the dealer using your vin and get a new key with your vin, and have a new tumbler put in, then theyd all match. Thats what I would do.

How much would a new cylinder cost? Was really just looking to get a new key cut, but if no one can do that it looks like I will have to do that.

The key for the door is the original, then I have a seperate key for starting the car, if this matters.

I'd think in the $50-60 buck range, plus something less than 1 hour labor. It sure would be alot easier than having 2 keys, especially since it seems like a hassle to get that ignition key copied.

Like Gilly said, go to the dealer with your registration/proof of ownership and just order a new ignition tumbler for your car by VIN. Should come with a new key that will also work your doors. Once installed, it'll be as it was the day it left the factory.

Call Tom Hanson at Caliber Motors in CA, an MB Dealer (I don't have the number, try 800 directory assistance). You may need to fax him proof of ownership, etc. I got a W124 ingnition cylinder and key ('86 300E) from him for about $70 + $8 FedEx shipping. The package comes with a spare key because they set the lock to the key. Installation is very simple, if your key still moves. I posted the entire service manaul description a few posts back -- search for it. It involves making a very simple wire tool to pop the tumbler out. The whole thing takes about 10 minutes once you've done it. This should be cheaper than rekeying the other locks on the car!

PS You can then sell your used, non matching tumbler and key on eBay.

I replaced a cylinder in an '84 190D in 1999. The part cost $60 and I changed it myself. It was an easy job.

I just ordered a new key for my 300E and I had to go to the dealer and show them my insurance card with my address and VIN number on it along with my driver's license with my picture on it. They made a copy of both.

Apparently, Mercedes has gotten up tight about this business because of a 60 Minute piece about how to steal Mercedes cars.

The dealer told me I had to pick up the key in person. He said Mercedes won't let them ship it or mail it.

Although I do business with Caliber all the time, I recommend going to a local dealership and ordering the cylinder in person. Even if you could fax Caliber the Info they require, they may not be able to send the part to you.
