Question Changing Interior Blub

Just bought a 1999 C230. The rear interior light isn't working. I've tried to take the cover off to replace the blub but can't seem to remove the cover. Just wondering if there is a secret to doing this?

My 300E dome light cover comes off by sliding the lens/cover to one side and pulling that side down, exposing the bulb. I tried this on my 98C230, and it seems to want to slide towards the passenger side of the car, but not the other direction. I assume that the cover is meant to slide and pulled down, and the light shining through the lens shows a couple of tabs on the drivers side of the lens cover that almost clear, but it looks like a thin probe has to be used to move the tabs that last millimeter or so in order to clear the roof and let it be pulled down, or else more force to the side than I could develop at present.

Does the rear light not work at all, not even when the rear dome light switch is turned on at the overhead console (by the sun roof switch)?
