I have noticed that I have a seepage from a power steering hose, it has left a wet spot on the left side of the windage tray covering the underside of the engine.
It seems very common on this model. 3 that I personally inspected either had it or was replaced under warranty.

Question I have is: Is it repairable with present hose or is replacement of hose (Done on warranty covered car) only answer.

If replacement, what is part number(s)?

Thanks in advance.

Yup, quite common to 400E's. I had mine fixed about a week before I sold it. I'm not at home (on the road after driving Benz at Richmond Intl Speedway) I would be happy to dig up the invoice then. Of course we would welcome you to fill out a parts inquiry in PartsShop. Best of Luck.

Hope this helps...Lee

Guys, Thanks for the reply.

I'm changing the ATF this Saturday, and will get a closer inspection when I am under the Car.

I guess another question I would in relation to this would be, What's the procedure for replacement of the fluid in the power steering system?

Filter replaceable as well if it has one in the resevoir?

Going on a 2500 mile trip in a couple of weeks and want to change fluids (Oil, Trans, Rear End,Brake, etc.) before I leave.

As far as PartsShop what are you guys using for shipping. UPS?

Thanks,

Mike

I took a look while detailing the engine compartment on vacation. I found no leaks at the front of the engine and pump/resevoir. Could not look at the Steering box itself and the connections. I did clean the undertray while I had it removed and I'll take another look to see if it seeps again, till then, I'll watch and wait.

Lee,
Did you get a chance to look up the invoice for your repair on the 400E. Just curious on the Part # and price.

I drove 2300 miles on vacation and used approx 1/2 qt of Mobil1.
If it continues,(i.e.Doesn't start leaking) I will be thrilled.
averaged about 22 mpg w/ A/C on @ 75MPH.
18.5-19 arounf town.

Car drove like a dream down and back.

I'm going to replace the plugs at the 1st chance I get.

Mike,
I have the invoice right here in front of me. The part number for the P/S hose is : 006 997 09 82. The job also required 2 M119 P/S hose clamps (# 005 997 45 90), the O-ring for the P/S reservoir (# 119 997 00 45), and a gasket for the P/S pump (# 129 466 01 80), and of course P/S fluid. (# 000 989 88 03)

Your mileage sounds about right in town. I use to get 18-20mpg in town, about 24-26mpg on long trips. Highway jaunts at 75-85mph were the norm, with occasional stints up to um...nevermind.

Be sure to use copper plugs when you do the change. Sounds like the car is really working out well for you.

Hope this helps...Lee

Lee,

Thanks for the info, It sounds like you had a few items replaced. Smart move. I'm gonna track down the cause of the seepage if it kills me. I hate oil spots in the driveway.

The car is great, I'm thrilled with it so far. It's replaced the Porsche as the daily driver.

I'm planning on showing it this fall in the local MBCA/CC. One thing I need to do is refiish the Sunroof. The paint on the rest of the car is great, The s/r paint is cloudy. tried buffing to no avail. I gonna pop it out and redo it.

Want to replace the tires but Better half has other wants first.

Mike,
Know whatcha mean on those tires... Just FYI: Tirerack has a KILLER deal on Michelin Pilot MXM's in 225/50/16, which is my fav 400E "plus" size. $137 a tire on sale (normally they are anywhere from 170 mailorder - 200+ retail OTC)

When my power steering was leaking (it "lost" fluid VERY slightly for awhile first...might notice a .5 cm. drop in fluid level, but never anything else in a 1 month period) When the leak got to the point of noticing it would wet the undertray, suspension, etc but never make it onto the ground/driveway. If yours is spotting the driveway, it may be a sooner rather than later item. Have you noticed how much P/S fluid your going through?

The sunroof paint difference is something I see on MANY W124's. Doesn't matter if it is original paint, repaint, whatever...it just does not age as well on the sunroof. Almost looks like little acid rain pits. The cloudy usually responds to some Meguiar's #9 and #7 + some Gold Class, but the "pits" are not as easy to dispell. Are the cloudy areas raised, or sunken/into the paint. If they are raised, a clay-cleaning bar should work wonders for you.

Talk to you later...Lee

It's not anything on the driveway or anything, but I did notice it on the undertray.
At first I thought it was where someone missed the funnel or something else, but I dunno. It's going to take some more investigation.

No it's just like you descirbed, water spot looking. I tried buffing with a buffer and compound, but it seemed like it came back worse. I talked to the Mb body shop and his thoughts are that the S/R doestn't have the sound insulation layer like the rest of the roof has and it is subject to more heat that the rest of the roof. Kinda makes sense because the S/R Panel is sprayed at the same time as the rest of the car with the same amount of paint. I guess I'll live until I respray it later. Kinda nice in that I can remove it to respray. Won't involve a lot of masking and such.

PS Don't know if you noticed but your reply's are being posted multiple times.
