Cooling problems

How to identify the source of cooling problems?

One of our cars (a 528E) is showing in increase of heat. Or is it a decrease in cooling ability?? It runs hotter than previously. The change was sudden in its onset.

I replaced the thermostat and that made for no real difference. The car not too long ago received a new water pump. How to tell if the problem is due to the radiator? Or perhaps the clutch on the fan?? Or ???

Any input appreciated

TIA

...Tracy

Tracy - I suppose the new pump could be weak. I just changed the water pump on a 3rd generation Accord and noticed quite a difference in the shape/design of the impellor blades. I've read elsewhere that this can affect coolant flow.

I replaced with a dealer item; the blade design on this item looked as though it could provide better flow.

I wonder if perhaps your new pump doesn't flow as well as it should?

My 2 cents.

Is it the 528e "eta" engine?

I had a friend with the same car/engine and the same problem. Turned out to be a warped cylinder head. Any sign of that? Oil/coolant mixing etc? BMW indicated when he was getting diagnosis that many of the eta engines had similar problems. Of course, he was SO FAR out of warranty that admiting it was harmless for them. Unlike MB dealers:

When shopping for his 450SL, Dad saw a nice looking 1982 380SL at a dealer. Pulling the cover, he found a single row chain. Run away!! Well, the dealer flatly denied any problems with single row chains in that car.
