Trans Question

O.K adjusted trans. modulator approx.two turns counter clockwise to eliminate harsh shifting.Shifting from 2nd. to 3rd. is much better, from 1st. to 2nd. somewhat better but from N TO DRIVE IS STILL HARSH. Also when i put car in park it moves about 6 in. before it holds. Is there another adjustment that i am missing? 1989 420 sel

My 560Sel always rolls forward about 6" when it is just put in park on a slight inclined surface before it holds after you take your foot off the brake.

That sounds like a badly worn parking pawl or more likely some worn out flex disc.

It is normal for MB's to roll a little due to the width of the parking pawl. Many people use parking brake first & don't feel the car roll.

The parking pawl on these late 80's trannies are massive. My 560SEL also rolls about 6" when parking on an incline, which is consistant with the spacing of the pawl notches. Sometime I use the parking brake, sometimes not. When I don't I simply hold the brake, and ease it off until the pawl catches.

The 4.5 is another story, I always always always use the hand brake on that one even when parking on level ground.

SIX INCHES though??

Oh well, I probably never noticed mine rolling since the steepest incline we have around here is the speed bump at the Wendy's drive-through! I wish someone would tell me why my transmission starts in third!!
