190E No Heat! (preparing for winter)
Yes I know it sounds crazy with all the warm weather around the country ... but I drained the coolant on the '87 190E 2.3 and I wanted to make sure I had full circulation. So I turned the heat on but no heat!
Any suggestions on how to sleuth this out?

The engine was hot, presumably? I'm sure you're not that dumb!
About your 911 - is it an early Solex carburettored model? Does it suffer from flatsports around 2500 - 3000 rpm? I heard this was a problem that went away with the Weber carb on the 911 L T and S before they went to the 'E's mechanical injection.

Russ Yes of course it was hot!
The 911 orignally came with Solex carbs but they were replaced with Webers. Jeff

Just a thought
My brother ran into a simular problem with his Range Rover truck. Ended up being air in the line. After he drove it a little the air worked it's self out and topped off antifreeze and all was well. Possible you've got an air-buble mucking up the works.
I would not think a bad thermostat would cause you problem?? Joel |

The radiator definately got warm (hot). The air bubble I can check out. Any specific place to bleed the cooling system on the 2.3 engine? On the 3.0 six I know there is a place to do it.

Ready for winter ...
The reason the heater wouldn't work is because the aux water pump was dead and BTW was leaking coolant. This is the little pump down near the exhaust manifold area on the '87 190E 2.3.
I replaced it with a good used one from my favorite bone yard for $40 and it is not pouring out heat. (Not that anyone needs a heater right now). Any suggestions? I do know the pipe going into the firewall is hot, but still no heat inside the car. The fan blows and I can direct air to the footwells.

Any procedures for figuring out why there is no heat? I have a new heater valve if necessary. Do these valves get stuck closed? I noticed its resting position is open.

Is your vehicle equipped with a monovalve? If so, use the SEARCH facility. Notorious for causing no-heat problems.

No mono valve .... but I started looking around. I took off the plastic cowel cover (for lack of better description) and found that the two hoses that go into the heater core and the coming out have been by-passed!
Some took a long hose and intercepted the inlet and connected to the outgoing. There was no coolant going to the heater core. Sooo the good news is I know why .... the bad news is why. I am afraid of the the second why. Sounds like I have a .... I almost hate to use the words ..... a heater core .... problem. I already have the lower dash down so I can see where one of the pipes goes into it on the driver's side. I am attaching the regular hoses, top it off with coolant, get her warm and then see ..... wish me luck. I understand a replacement of said part can be quite lengthy ..... Haasman
