different part # for oil filter?

Hi,

I bought an oil filter from the dealer, the part # on the box is A 000 180 22 09, after I opened the box, the number on the filter itself shows A 112 184 03 25. What gives?

When I took out my old oil filter, the number on it shows A 112 184 04 25, and the shape is a bit different from the one dealer sold me. The old filter has plastic cap molding on each end of the filter cylinder. Looking at the bottom inside of the filter housing on the engine, I can see a round indention which fits the molding perfectly when the filter is inserted. The new filter doesn't have this molding on each end. I asked the parts guy at dealer, he doesn't know why either, just said based on my car's model/year, their computer shows that's the right oil filter.

Need knowledged mind to clarify my confusion. Was I getting the wrong filter? Thanks.

Mercedes recently updated the filter for the 112/113 engines. The original design filters were not lasting the length of time btween oil changes determined by the FSS system. The paper portion of the filter was coming apart.

I'm glad someone finally mentioned about the paper coming loose on the MB oil filters. I've noticed it on both of my benzes and I change the oil every 5k miles. I recently started using an oil filter sold by STP. The jury is out on how well it works but the filter uses hard plastic top and bottom caps that don't deteriorate over time.

Anyone else tried these filters? You can buy them at AutoZone.

Do you have the part number for the STP filter?

This really confuses me. If the filter with plastic caps is the correct one to use, then doesn't that mean the one the dealer sold me was not the updated version. My old filter has the plastic cap on both ends. When I took it out, the paper looked fine to me. The one dealer sold me is just plain paper element, no plastic caps, but both ends was treated with sort of harden chemical.

Can anyone look up or verify what is the updated MB part number for the oil filter on MY02 W203 (C320/C32)?

Thanks.

No, unfortunately I don't have part# handy, AutoZone used to carry the Deutsch filters and the one both of my cars used was a D670. Now I can only find the STP filters and they have a cross reference sheet right on the shelf where they are located.

So far I'm impressed with the construction of it. I haven't bought a filter from benz in a while so I don't know what they are selling now, but I do know the caps on the STP's don't deteriorate like the MANN or HENGST filters do.....or did if they have been updated too.

The filters with the plastic ends are the early version.

The filters that I've bought for several years from Deutsch and Mercedes looked to have plastic ends until you removed them at an oil change, that's when I noticed that the fibers of the end caps were deteriorating and getting soft.

Is this the filter your referring to? Because the STP's are showing no signs of deterioration at oil change. I don't know how well they are filtering, I need to do an oil sample to find out, but they look just as good when I take them out as when I put them in...

Coincidence, I purchased an oil filter from a Benz dealer today for my 260E. The filter is much shorter than the one I used to buy.
Inquiring about the apparent error, the parts guy told me Mercedes had revised some oil filters. The new one, although shorter than what was previously available is, apparently, a better design......I was told
Parts no: 102-184-05-01: Price $10.70, which is $1.27 more than the previous filter.
it also comes with a oil plug washer, sold (invoiced) separately, but included in the box for $0.78
