Question Measuring ATF-level on W124..?

I have been told that when you measure the auto tranny fluid level, the engine should be running.. Is that true?

When the engine is shut off, the oil on the dipstick is right at the 'full' mark. But when engine is running it's at the 'low' mark.

What's the correct way to measure it? Engine running or not?

Engine running at operating temperature (car has been run down the road for at least 15 minutes). Shift the lever through all the gears, put it in park, wait about a minute and then check it. Do not over fill and make sure you are on level ground.

Pay close attention to what engatwork says about getting the vehicle out on the road for 15 min. (or 10-15 miles); it's not enough to just get the engine temp up to snuff by idling in your driveway. If the t. fluid is warm enough, the dipstick will be hot, too, so be careful.

I use Mobil 1 ATF since I live in a cold winter area.

Dexron/Mercon III should work.
