I would like to have a remanufactured transmission installed on my 88 300E. The transmission is out of warranty, so I would like to know if any competent mechanic can install it b/c I heard that if the tranny is not properly installed or adjusted, it could burn quickly. Is this true.
The 2 options I have are: 1. Go to a mechanic who deals with both american and foreign cars. I've seen a number of MB and Porches parked in front of his shop, however, I don't know exactly what they were there for but, he does seem to know quite a bit about the 300E. 2. Take the car to a transmission shop. Heard this guy is good with foreign cars (from a mechanic who's shop uses him). Which one should I choose and about how much should I expect to pay for the labor - also planning to change 2 U joints and a flex disk (I provide the parts). Also, a mechanic/transmission shop recommendation (apart from the dealer), who is good and reasonable in the Westchester County, NY area would be appreciated. Thank you [This message has been edited by Larry (edited 06-29-1999).] [This message has been edited by Larry (edited 06-29-1999).] [This message has been edited by Larry (edited 06-29-1999).] |
You can learn alot just by visiting and talking to the people who own and/or operate the shop. I would make my decision on this data. I think the R&R for the trans is about 7-8 hours.
