Hood liner coming loose. Glue it or what?
1990 420 SEL
The insulation pad that covers the inside of the hood has come loose on one side. What should I use to reattach it? Thanks in advance for tips/advice Todd

You can attach it easily with 3M Super Trim Adhesive
Part#: 511535-080909 (a heavy duty spray adhesive). Use this stuff instead of the regular spray adhesive. Be sure to carefully cover the engine and areas you don't want to get this stuff on. Spray both sides and DO NOT attach. Let dry. Spray again a second time. DO NOT attach. Let dry. Then carefully attach starting with the already attached area and work towards edge to avoid wrinkles. I have an old bed sheet that I drape over the entire engine to keep the stuff from getting all over everything, which it will.

Drying only takes three to five minutes. Try PepBoys or call the 800 number for 3M. It is available.

I am about to install a new hood pad on my '80 300SD. If you search around you can locate the 3M Super Trim Adhesive locally. Make sure you get the can of "super" rather than the general adhesive also sold by 3M. I checked with Pep Boys here and could only find the general and after going to several parts stores ended up picking up a can at the NAPA store. I have been told it will take one full can to do the hood pad.

My mechanic says one can per hood pad as well. Prices vary from ~$13 - $18 if memory serves me correct.

contact adhesive for hood liner
I've had success with Rubatex Contact Adhesive that I purchased from the local Graingers. It takes heat, etc. and is especially effective in repairing the odd area of existing padding that may have come undone from the metal hood. It survives the heat and does not seem to become brittle. Its ingredients are the usual solvents acetone and toluene and "polychloroprene rubber resin." The 1 pint can comes with a captive brush applicator. I assume Grainger's has warehouses nationaly, if not their web site is www.grainger.com
Check item 3F417 on page 3348 of their catalog. Or you can do a search for "contact adhesive" and all the products, including 3M, come up. |
