A certain type of tint...
 

Hey everyone, my friend has a 98 clk320 that he just got and he wants to tint the windows. We were thinking regular colored dark tint (his car is black) but then I remembered seeing a silver 500E with silver-esque tint. It wasn't reflective like that ugly chrome, but just a very light silver color, almost looked like it wasn't there except for one couldn't see inside the car. Anybody know what im talking about here? Pics would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

is it similar to the tint that comes standard on the Lexus RX300? just "silvery" enough to stop people from looking in...

I saw this type of tint yesterday on a Civic while driving down the freeway. I almost pulled along side of him to ask him what type of tint that was. Really cool looking IMO! It's kinda like the finish you'd see on a really expensive pair of sunglasses, not totally reflective but a slight silver reflective-type tint.

well, its not like the rx300, that is too reflective. It is very very hard to describe, and I guess if you havn't seen it, you wouldn't really know what im talking about. (Thats why im having so much trouble finding it... hehe)

I did the same research about four months ago, this are my findings:

What you are looking for is the Spectrally-Selective 76% High Performance film. Solar Gard is the manufacturer. It has a light transmission of 76%, a heat rejection of about 40% and 99% of the UVA and UVB rays are rejected. It is of course scratch resistant.

I strongly recommend contacting Alexia Foster at Auto Window Tinting 1-888-404-8468 1-503-671-9615 Pacific Time Zone, for additional information.

Don't forget to check your state laws as they apply to window tinting. If you go to a reputable tint shop they should know them but it's your responsibility. Hate to see people spend good money on cool looking accessories for their cars only to find out they must remove them to avoid further citations. Just because a place sells it doesn't mean its okay.

I don’t think the spectrally-Selective film is on that chart; it is spouse to be a new type of film.

This is a quote from an e-mail from Alexia Foster from tintshops.com:

“The spectrally-Selective films are new and do cost
More. The idea of the Spectrally-Selective film is to let as much light in as possible and still get a good heat rejection. We are sending a sample. It is hard to tell what they would look like on the glass with a sample because it always looks different when the glass is all covered”.

My suggestion is to contact them and get from them first hand information about this film. I would offer to do that, but I’m overseas and it’s not possible for me… Any ways, if anyone gets more information, please share!!

It is indeed new, and it is Sun Gard's best film. It was originally designed for commercial applications but I guess it looked so good that they started tinting cars with it. It's called the "Sputtered" series. The tint actually has 3 layers that gives it a unique look. I'm going to call around here in Houston to see if any Sun Gard installers have it.
