My '88 300E acts very strangely sometimes. Even though I have the temp turned to max cool (at the detent)it sometimes turns on the heat. At other times cold air comes from the center of the console while heat pours out from vents near the doors. This drives me crazy. I have heard that the climate control has a lot of problems on this car and is difficult to diagnose. So the questions are:

(1) Have others had similar problems that were solvable?
(2) Are there specialists available who can diagnose and fix such problems without costing a fortune?
(3) Any recommendations for good MB mechanics either in Fremont (where I work) or Oakland (where I live).

There are two distinct possiblities, you could have a faulty control unit or a vacuum leak in the system somewhere. A Mercedes tech is your only option.

From my past experience dealing with problems like yours it sounds like the control unit. I would seek a professional diagnosis before replacement of the controller though.
