I found an 86 300E with 119,000 miles on it last week and took it to my usual repair facility for pre-purchase inspection. Their report back was somewhat less than enthusiastic. The worst of it was a leaky trans seal which they said might run $1500 to repair. Is this a reasonable estimate or are they being a little pessimistic about the price? The car has some amg parts, wheels, exhaust, and engine - and they also weren't happy with the offset on the wheels and the presence of a non-stock exhaust system. They're preference is Porsches and Audis, so they may be a bit biased. thanks for any thoughts Jim |
The front pump trans seal is a very common leak on the 300E. I have done more than 20 myself over the years. I think we quote 900.00 for the repair. If this is all they found wrong and you like the AMG parts, you will probably be OK to buy it minus the cost of the repair.
