I have an 85 300D and a 83 240D. Both have 260,00 miles on them. They ride well, and my front end alignment specialist says the shocks are okay.

But I'm wondering, I just redid the ball joints. What s the replacement interval for my shocks, particularly the fronts?

Also jsut how diiferent are normal shocks vice Koni's? I believe in using Great parts, but I cant gold palte these cars, my fiance will get p___ and my daughter wants to go to college soon.

I would not change them unless they start leaking. Year old Konis are probably not going to be as good as those 260,xxx mile Bilsteins.

My car only had around 155k on it when I replaced the shocks (which looked original). They were absolutely shot - you could move them up and down with your two hands, there was little to no pressure, and they didn't bounce back to their original position. And no, the weren't leaking, so I don't buy the argument that you should only change them if they leak. I had the exact same situation with struts in another car I once owned.

Change in handling of the car was worth every penny spent. On the other hand, if your tires are wearing o.k. and you are satisfied with the way your car handles, the leave well enough alone.

I replaced my original Sachs with Bilsteins (front) at 150K on an advice of an alignment specialst and over the advice of my regular mech. The problem was not up and down bouncing (they behaved like a brand-new KYB's), but the sideways movement of the shaft. Now the whole suspension feels tighter and there is an improvement in handling over a spectrum of bumps (i.e. it's the same decisive motion-thump over 1/2" bump and a 3" pothole). Getting ready to do the same with my rears this weekend. And no, none of them leaked or indicated any wear. I read somewhere that the original OE mid-80's shocks are good for 150-200K.
