How difficult is it to renew the fuel tank assembly in a '98 C230? Approximate labor time?

Pardon my curiosity, but why would a five year old car need a full fuel tank replacement?

7.0 x $87.00 = $609.00 plus parts. Youch.

Tank was punctured when driver took vehicle off-road while avoiding an accident.
