Swapping tranny on 98 sl500 for........

I have a 98 SL500 and the tranny is starting to stall 2 seconds when going from reverse to park or drive. I have a 94 SL500 that I could use or a 98CL500 that I could use to swap. Will either of these fit? I prefer to use the 94SL500 if I can. If neither option will work is there an internet website that sells them? Also, there is a growling noise coming from the front. Not a grinding (metal on metal). I just had the brakes and rotors replaced and they work great but, this noise isn't from them (I don't think). Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sam

On the 98 sl500, it is a 5 speed driver adaptive transmission. On the 94, I think it is only a 4 speed.

Basically, there's no way in hell you're going to get the 94 SL500's transmission into a MY 98... there are so many differences, including computer connections, etc, etc, etc, and ETC.
The 98 CL500 might be a near direct fit though.

Good luck,.

Just a shameless bump!

Thanks

If by "98 CL500" you mean a S500 Coupe, that I believe would be a close match.
But I think you'd really be throwing the baby out with the bath water. These are expensive transmissions and should be rebuilt, not just tossed out because of a problem. Sounds like a bad front pump.

Thanks for the input. What front pump are you referring to? You think that is making the growling noise? As far as tossing the tranny out goes, I would never. I have a CL500 and and SL500. I hardly ever drive the CL and want to just swap the 2 and worry about fixing it later. Would I need a lot of new parts to swap the 2.

Thanks again!

Gilly,
The 98 S500 coupe was a CL500...
remember?? they rebadged them in 97, I believe!

;)

Ok, yeah, i had to go to MBUSA.com to find out. 1998 is actually the first year they rebadged it the CL.

The whole prospect of what you are considering seems ridiculous to me, swapping trannies back and forth. Take the tranny out, repair tranny, reinstall tranny.
The front pump I am referring to is the front pump. Yes, more than likely it is the sorce of the growling and is also what is causing the shifting problem. I'd have a transmission specialist familiar with 722.6 (probably a job for a dealer) do some quick diagnosis on it.
