1973/450sl--baaaad runing--as in bad
I played mechanic and removed the distributor and cleaned the trigger points, I regapped the spark plugs to 1.00mm as listed on this site. The car now runs like it has a mind of its own. The tach needle flys around without relation to speed. The oil pressure never goes past 15 . What did I do ? I guess I will have to take it to a real mechanic.Any and all ideas will be appreciated.Note the idle had to be turned up higher just to keep it running and not cut off. The car stumbles at times and appears she is ready to shut-off. Can anyone help with the vacuum door locking system,as I lock the door (driver's side) trhe other door and the fuel lid will not lock

I don't know if you've fixed your problem yet. It souds as if you installed your distributor incorrectly. IF you take a piece of chalk and make a mark at the TDC mark in the crank and roate the engine by hand until it lines up with the timing pointer behind the crank you should be at TDC. Take the distributor cap off and make sure that the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug wie. The is also on mine which is a 77 450sl a notch on the distributor to line the rotor up with. As far as the vaccum door locks are concerned they are notorious for acting strange. I took my door panel off and lubed the linkages with white grease and they work beautifully now.
