Yesterday I had my car up on a rack and noticed transmission fluid leaking around what looks like a sending unit for the fluid. The shop tech where I was said he thought the O-ring was bad but that you have to replace the whole sender, not just the ring. Anybody agree or disagree with this diagnosis and if so, what do you call this unit? Can't find it on the parts list of any of the online parts suppliers. Thanks!

WHERE on the transmission?? At the left front?? Possibly a screw on electrical connector?

Whatever it was it was right about in line (front to rear aspect) with where the shifter is, on the drivers side. It did of course have wires running to it which were wrapped in some plastic housing. The housing was pretty soaked with fluid. I don't play with transmissions. Pardon my ignorance.

On the drivers(left) side there are 2 switches, one at the front just behind the bell housing & then the neutral/safety switch that is behind the gear shift linkage. both have seals behind them that can leak!

Thanks D.O.C. I think my problem switch is the one forward, near the front of the housing. Do I have to replace the whole thing, just the seal, or does anybody know. Any idea what that signal is for? Thanks.

Oh yeah, this thing looks about like the size of a spark plug.

I just replaced mine the other day because it was leaking and giving me a code 40. It's called an A/T protection switch. There are 2 wires going to it that are secured with a knurled, spin on, lock.

It's very easy to replace and it cost around $60.00 if I remember correctly. It is located on the drivers side of the tranny just forward of the modulator valve. There is only 1 o-ring on it and you'll see that when you remove it.

One more thing Dave, just exactly where is it leaking at? Where the sending unit screws into the tranny or where the electrical plug is? My unit was leaking internally where the electrical plug connected onto it. So it was obvious my sending unit was bad.

Also I drained out the ATF from the pan drain plug before I removed it, I wasn't sure if ATF was going to come gushing out or not so I didn't take any chances. (Nothing like ATF running down your arm)
